Why Google is Fighting With Robots?

Google’s NotebookLM was popular is another AI note taking buddy for students, but now I do think it’s time to think again. All of a sudden Google’s NotebookLM is popular, actually not for some unique add-on features, but for something it ignores.

ACCORDING to the recent reports, Google’s NotebookLM has started to bypass the long standing rule-book of the web – robots.txt

But Wait, What’s That Robot Thing Again?

It is a tiny but powerful file which tells the Search Engine (Like Google): “HEY! DON’T PEEK HERE!”.

It acts as a “Do not Disturb” sign for search Engines. This was the story till now – but all of a sudden, Google’s NotebookLM don’t necessarily play by the same rules.

So, What’s NotebookLM Doing Differently?

NotebookLM — Google’s experimental AI note-taking assistant — is designed to read, summarize, and contextualize information from different sources.

However, reports from Search Engine Journal revealed that it doesn’t follow robots.txt exclusions, meaning it can technically “read” content that traditional Google bots would skip.

Don’t get NotebookLM wrong, it’s just digger deeper into the archives to LEARN BETTER.

Why It Matters?

Below are provided some pointers why Marketers, SEO professionals, and Content Creators started feeling uneasy:

  • Content Control: If NotebookLM can access data marked as “off-limits,” your proprietary content might end up in someone’s AI summary.
  • Ethical Dilemma: Is this “learning” or “leeching”? The line between fair use and content scraping just got blurrier.
  • Transparency Concerns: Google hasn’t openly clarified how or why NotebookLM skips robots.txt — and that’s what’s worrying many in the digital space.

So yes, it’s both fascinating and a little DIFFERENT.

Now is it Innovation or Invasion?

This isn’t Google’s first rodeo when it comes to bending the rules of web data. But NotebookLM takes things to a whole new level. Often times the Updates seems harsh, but necessary. Microsoft did the same thing by ending Windows 10 – check out the full story by clicking -> HERE.

We’re looking at a shift where AI models are learning directly from live web content, not just what’s been indexed for SEO.

In simpler terms, AI is going beyond crawling the internet, it is basically DIGESTING it.

What It Means For You? – The Marketers & Creators

Before you panic and start rewriting your privacy policies, here’s what you can do:

  1. Monitor Your Site Activity:
Check your server logs for unusual AI-related user agents. NotebookLM’s crawlers might not be clearly labeled yet, but patterns speak.
  2. Protect Sensitive Data:
Use login walls, CAPTCHAs, or token-based access for premium content — these block AI tools more effectively than robots.txt ever could.
  3. Educate Your Audience:
If you’re a content creator, talk about it. Transparency is the new trust currency.
  4. Accept the New Normal:
AI isn’t just a visitor anymore. It’s part of your audience — and it doesn’t always knock.

Privacy Begins at Home Classroom?

NotebookLM is also used in classrooms, including in colleges like ours. Students upload study material, and the AI summarizes them beautifully.

But in a twisted irony, while we’re learning ethics of AI and data privacy, the tool we’re using might be doing exactly what we’re told not to – peeking where it shouldn’t.

We can safely say that in 2025 – the student tool might be teaching the teachers a lesson on ethics.

My Take in the Notebook

Sometimes going beyond the rules isn’t always to break them. If it’s Google breaking over it’s own ROBOTS, that’s definately due to some enhancements in security – it’s ultimately for you only.

The question isn’t “Should AI read everything?” anymore.
It’s “Can we make AI respect boundaries while it reads everything?”
